Maths

At HEARTS, we aim for pupils to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop a deep conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge both rapidly and accurately
  • be confident and competent in using and applying basic skills of counting and written and mental calculation
  • learn to reason mathematically   including  exploring varied representations, identifying mathematical patterns, relationships and connections,   following  lines of enquiry, making generalisations  and developing  their justification or proof using mathematical language
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication
  • communicate clearly and fluently about mathematics, using the appropriate mathematical language

Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The aspects of mathematics are taught in sequences  but opportunities are given for  pupils to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They also apply their mathematical knowledge to Science and other subjects.

We follow the Early Years Framework for EYFS and the Primary National Curriculum programme of study for KS1 and KS2.

We follow a mastery approach as described in the National curriculum. The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress should always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.
